This study explores the implementation of multicultural education in elementary schools located in the Tengger
indigenous community of Probolinggo, East Java. The Tengger society is well known for its cultural, linguistic,
and religious diversity, where different communities have lived harmoniously for generations. Schools thus serve
as strategic spaces for fostering tolerance and respect for diversity from an early age. This research employed a
qualitative case study design. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with
teachers, principals, students, and community leaders, as well as documentation of school activities. Thematic
analysis was applied through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that
multicultural education in Tengger schools is implemented by integrating local wisdom, such as the Kasada ritual,
the Tengger language, and traditional arts into both classroom learning and extracurricular activities. Cross
religious student interactions demonstrate values of tolerance, solidarity, and mutual respect that are deeply
embedded in the school environment. Challenges include limited teacher resources, the scarcity of locally based
teaching materials, and infrastructural constraints in mountainous areas. Nevertheless, strong community support,
religious leaders’ involvement, and alignment with the national curriculum provide significant opportunities to
strengthen multicultural education. This study concludes that multicultural education in Tengger schools plays a
crucial role in maintaining social harmony, preserving local culture, and shaping young generations to be
inclusive, tolerant, and well-prepared for global challenges.
